Productive harvest so far

Combines and tractors make the methodical trips up and down the rows of the crops that are ready to harvest, only stopping to fill the backs of farm trucks. The farm trucks then make the trips from the fields to the grain elevators with mounds of corn or soybeans or milo peaking over the tops of the beds, which often having to wait in line before unloading. Then they return to the fields to start the whole process over again. It’s a familiar scene around Douglas County as fall harvest kicks into full gear.
BHS boy runners roll … again

While winning a meet with all runners in the top 12 places and topping the second place team by 57 points might seem like the highlight event of a cross-country team’s day, the Baldwin High School boys cross-country team is not your average team. No doubt these runners were hurrying to the finish line for something other than the glory of victory. But for what? “Mama Spielman’s is great,” answered senior standout Eric Black. “Strawberry Jell-O cake is soooo good!” “Really, the only reason we like coach Spielman is because he takes us to eat at his mom’s house in Sabetha each year after the meet,” joked teammate Glen Stansberry about the annual dinner staged at coach Mike Spielman’s childhood home.
BHS girls pull sweep, too

The bad weather didn’t stop the Baldwin High School girls varsity cross country team from taking first place at Sabetha on Thursday. All the Bulldog girls placed in the top 25 and three of them placed in the top five. Sophomore Erica Ogle was first, junior Kayla Pringle third, junior Abby Hofmeier fourth, sophomore Michelle Pressgrove eighth, freshman Missy Westgate 11th, sophomore Leah Clay 20th and senior Nicki Frerking 23rd. Ogle led most of the race with an ending time of 12:32.
Bulldog volleyball team sets new win total

From Signal Staff Reports Baldwin High School volleyball is still going strong, heading for sub-state, and doing better than any team that BHS has ever seen. The Bulldog’s won five games in the DeSoto Spikefest Tournament Saturday to finish second and set a new season record mark. The Bulldog record is now 22-12, which pleases second-year head coach Jill Brown. “We set the record for the most amount of wins in a season with 22,” said Brown.
Baldwin High falls flat against Eudora

For the second year in a row, class was in session when Baldwin High School and Eudora clashed in a Frontier League showdown. For the second year in a row, BHS’s Bulldogs got schooled, this time by a 35-14 count Friday at home.
