Baker University’s basketball teams got the season off right Saturday night, with both teams picking up wins over Haskell Indian Nations University. The Baker men won 75-68 and the women had an easier time of it, taking a 69-44 victory.

It took Jim Williams a couple of times to finally decide to enlist in the Air Force, but when he did, he never thought he’d still be in the military 26 years later. “I’d gone and sat in front of the recruiters station in Lawrence a couple of times,” Williams said. “I sat there and stared at it a little bit and then drove off. I wasn’t really sure that’s what I wanted to do.” But the Baldwin resident eventually made up his mind and enlisted, which was just the beginning of his military life. “I never dreamed I’d make a career of it,” he said. But he did make a career of it.
