Baker track teams shine at conference meet
Interim head coach Rob Mallinder was named Heart of America Athletic Conference womens coach of the year for track after his team finished second at the conference meet on May 4-5 in Baldwin City.
It is Mallinder's second conference coach of the year award. He was honored as womens cross country coach of the year in the fall. All 16 members of the Baker womens track team that competed made all-conference, with three conference champions and nine medalists.
Led by outstanding performances in the field events by Scott Rieger, junior from Arnold, Mo., and Jerry Baker, sophomore from Morrowville, Baker took fifth in the Heart of America Athletic Conference outdoor track championship on May 4-5 in Baldwin City.
Rieger scored 21 individual points and Baker scored 20, with both setting seasonal bests in several events. He cleared 6' 0" in his first high jump of the year to take fourth and took sixth in the shot put and hammer. His shot put was also a seasonal best.
Baker set a seasonal best in the pole vault after clearing 14' 6" and taking second place. He also set seasonal bests in the javelin to finish third and the triple jump to take fifth. He finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles.
