BHS claims four all-leaguers
Four Baldwin High School basketball players, two each from the boys and girls teams, were selected as first-teamers to the Frontier League All-League team.
Ben Cosman and Heath Knight, both seniors, were first-team selections for the second year in a row. For the girls, junior Colleen Kivett and freshman Emily Brown made the first team.
Honorable mention selections to the teams were seniors Tony Zuzzio and Luke Tutschulte for the boys and junior Jodie Bacon for the girls. The selections were made at a league meeting last week. Results were delayed until after the state basketball tournament.
Knight, a 6-foot-5 swingman, averaged 16.9 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. Cosman, a 6-4 postman, averaged 13.4 points and 9.2 rebounds per outing. Coach Bobby Taul believed both belonged on the all-league team.
"They're definitely two of the better players in the league," said Taul. "I think they're very deserving. I don't get to vote for my own players, so they were the choices of the other coaches around the league.
"To repeat as first-team selections to the all-league team is a pretty good honor," he said.
The pair was honored earlier in the year for being nominated to the McDonald's All-Star game, although they weren't selected.
Brown and Kivett combined to lead the BHS girls in almost every statistical category. Kivett, a 5-10 swing player, averaged 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. She also hit 47 percent from the floor, 39 percent from the 3-point line and 70 percent from the free throw line. Brown, a 6-1 post, averaged 11.5 points, seven rebounds, three blocked shots and 2.5 steals per game. She also hit 58 percent from the field.
"I felt we deserved it as a team," coach Eric Toot said of the selections. "Going into the league meeting I felt like we deserved two first-team and an honorable mention selection. So I think we got what we deserved.
"I didn't know if it would happen since we're so balanced," he said.
The boys finished the season with a 14-7 record and the girls were at 17-4. Both teams were eliminated from state competition at the Baldwin sub-state tourney, the girls in the first round and the boys in the second.
Other first-team selections for the boys were: Dave Ward, Paola, Paul Ray, Spring Hill; Josh Flett, Wellsville; Davey Highfill and Lamar Harrison, Gardner; Brian Fischer, Eudora; Jared Dorsch, Louisburg; Dan Stanage and David Williams, Prairie View.
For the girls, first-team choices were: Lexy McDonnell, Amanda Ohms and Jalissa Miller, Anderson County; Melissa Richardson and Andrea Gurene, Paola; Megan Sullivan and Jessica Hocker, Spring Hill; Kristen Bowes, Louisburg; Kristen McCullough, Gardner; and Lauren Kracl, Eudora.
