Congratulations go to debate
To the editor:
As we all celebrate the successes of Baldwin High School's various athletic teams, we may be overlooking the success of another BHS team the Baldwin Debate Squad.
This team has quietly made a name for themselves over the past several months. Not only have they garnered numerous individual tournament medals, they also sent three two-man teams to the State Novice Tournament. One of these teams came home with a fourth place medal.
This past weekend, four juniors Chris Eichhorn, Matt Noonan, Brett Myrick and Jeff Wagner and their two alternates, Sam Reznicek and Eric Jorgensen placed first in their Regional Class 4A competition. This is the first time in over 10 years that BHS has won at regional. With this win, they have earned the right to compete in the Class 4A State competition in Topeka Friday and Saturday.
As a judge and a proud parent of two debaters I'd like to encourage the community to realize the amount of time and effort that goes into debate preparation and congratulate all debate students. Also, a huge thanks should be given to debate coach Charles Holvoet. Mr. Holvoet voluntarily gives up most Tuesday evenings and Saturdays between September and January to chauffeur debaters to and from tournaments all over the state. He's been a quiet encourager to a team of students who are learning the life skills of thinking quickly and speaking persuasively on their feet.
Good luck at State Brett, Chris, Matt, Jeff and Mr. Holvoet. You have made Baldwin proud!
