Tanning salon new downtown
Joanna's Tanning Salon recently opened inside Quilter's Paradise, 713 8th Street.
Joanna Vesecky is the owner of the tanning salon, which is equipped with two standing "tanning beds" with private dressing rooms. Vesecky also sells a full line of California Tan tanning lotions, including tan accelerators and lotions for beginning and regular tanners.
Vesecky said she "checked around" before choosing the standing tanning beds. She said the standing bed has stronger bulbs than "lay down" beds, which provides a faster tan. Standing beds are also more sanitary, she said.
"The only thing you touch that someone else touched is the floor," Vesecky said.
Tanning times range from three or four minutes, for beginning or fair-skinned tanners, up to 12 minutes for the seasoned tanner. For the comfort of tanners, the tanning beds are equipped with a fan and stereo speakers. Tanning is limited to once every 48 hours, or three times a week.
Tanning is $5 a session, and multi-session tanning packages are available. An opening special is one-year of unlimited tanning for $156 a package that normally costs $585. Vesecky also offers other incentives.
"For every fifth person you refer, you get a free tan," she said. "There are some high school girls having a competition amongst themselves."
Tanners under 18 years of age are required to have a parent's consent. All tanners fill out a tanning history.
Vesecky recommends tanning at least twice a week to develop a base tan, and tanning once a week or every other week to maintain the tan. She also recommends using lotion.
"You can tan without lotion, but you won't tan as deep and it won't last as long," she said.
Vesecky accepts walk-in customers, but said appointments guarantee a time slot. The tanning salon, which has been inspected by the state, is open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The phone number is 594-9999. The salon is located in the back of Quilter's Paradise.
