Practice time begins
Turnout good for Baldwin High teams

Monday brought an end to summer for those athletically inclined at Baldwin High School. Practice started, even though school was still down the road.
Baker picked second in HAAC

Pre-season polls are often worth about the paper they’re printed on not much, in other words. Football is about a lot of things and polls are just a small part of it. But, surprise, the Baker University Wildcats are picked to finish second in the Heart of America Athletic Conference pre-season poll. Only time will tell. “I was kind of surprised. I really was,” said Baker head coach John Frangoulis. “I thought we’d be in the top five, but realistically I thought third or fourth.” HAAC power-house Benedictine is picked to finish first, almost unanimously by conference coaches. Benedictine returns 16 starters from last year’s conference champion 10-1 team.
Ballad’ tryouts start next week

There are 28 speaking roles in this year’s production of “The Ballad of Black Jack,” according to the show’s director-choreographer, Carolee Vincent.

Joyce Wasmund and Genny Hunsinger examine one jar of green beans, set it down and pick up another. After several minutes of discussing the maturity of the beans, the level of the water and other important canning factors, the pair eventually selects the blue, red and white ribbon winners. The beans are then set on the shelf and the judges move on to the next food preservation category. Wasmund and Hunsinger spent a majority last Friday morning judging food preservation entries, as well as other food entries, at the Vinland Fair.
