Tryouts for Ballad of
Black Jack set
August 25 and 26 are the dates set for tryouts for "Ballad of Black Jack," to be performed during Maple Leaf Festival. Tryouts will be August 25 at the Lawrence Public Library at 2 p.m. and August 26 at Baldwin City Library at 2 p.m. Singers, dancers and actors are needed. Come prepared to sing the "Do Re Mi" song from Sound of Music. Speaking parts: Two parts for boys ages 8-13, several parts for young men and women ages 20-30, other juicy parts for mature men and women. Call 785-594-2378 for information.
Jonathon Boyd, Eagle Scout from Baldwin City, took four Troop 65 Boy Scouts, Matt Davis, Jake Hogsett, Matt LaBuda and Cameron Scruggs, to Lawrence to conduct the flag ceremony at a recent Wednesday night concert at South Park.
Now or Never Club
to meet today
The Now or Never Club will meet today at the Senior Center for a noon potluck. Kristen Dymacek, writer for the Baldwin City Signal, will be the guest speaker. Bring a covered dish to participate in the potluck.
Scout received Eagle
John Russell, Riverside, Mo., received his Eagle Scout citation in April of 2001. His service project was to build two wooden benches for the church that sponsors the Scout troop.
He became a Cub Scout in Pack 273 in 1990 and bridged into Troop 288 with his father, Noel Russell, as an ASM. As a Boy Scout, he earned 30 merit badges, has held many troop positions and attended and instructed at Junior Leader training.
Russell has attended summer camp at H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation for six of the last seven years, spending the summer of 1998 on staff at Bartle.
He recently graduated from Park Hill South High School and has enlisted for a six-year term in the U.S. Navy in the nuclear propulsion field and intends to achieve a degree in nuclear or aerospace engineering.
He is the son of Noel and Victoria Russell, Riverside, Mo., and grandson of Nick and Marge Kring, Baldwin City.
Linwood High School
Alumni has meeting
The Linwood High School Alumni gathered on June 2 in the Basehor-Linwood Middle School. A business meeting was held. Honored classes were 1950 and 1951 and 1975 and 1976. Those attending from Baldwin City were: Richard and Tanye Moore, Bob and Donna Saile, Marilyn Broyles, Tom and Cheryl Christian, Richard and Faye Ann Anderson and Charles and Barbara Riley.
Cub Scouts sponsor
The BES playground was the setting for the Pack 3065 bicycle rodeo. Those who registered were: Tiger Scout Jake Bovee; Wolf Scouts Cody Keener and Luke Lawrenz; Bear Scouts Cedric Liemkuehler, Jason Brewster and Justin Vander Tuig; first year Webelos Nicholas Bovee, Sam Foye and Brian Lawrenz; second year Webelos Zack Brandt, David Garrison and Brent Leimkuehler and those who registered but were not Scouts were: Lisa and Joshua Young; Annie Bovee; Ally Foye; Joe Pierce; Patrick, Russell, Sara and Owen Anderson.
The EMS team, Rod Sumonja and Justin Temple, talked with the bikers on safety and handed out bicycle helmets. The police team, Colleen Larson and Patty James, handed out prizes and helped with bicycle registration.
Scout leaders were: David Garrison, LaRoy Brandt, Frank Foye, Allison Bovee and Mitzi Leimkuehler. Others who helped were: Aaron Beuthien, Daren Gratts, Jordan Hanson, Logan Keener, Kirstin Shuck, Robbie Brewster and Donna Gratts.
Kids Crusade set at
New Life Assembly
The New Life Assembly of God, Baldwin City, will be having a Kids Crusade titled "On the Right Track with Jesus" for ages four and up. It will be today, Thursday and Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday noon to 2 p.m. Graduation is Sunday.
