School board talks about growth
April 11, 2001
The Baldwin School Board revisited the district’s master plan Monday night, without coming to any definitive action. It approved motions to republish the budget, adopt goals for the district, and approve the high school handbook. A request by the city for a temporary easement on school property for Sixth Street construction was also approved.

On March 19, 11 Baldwin High School students and their teacher, Karen Moreau, traveled across the sea to France and then did their home stays in Geneva, Switzerland, and arrived home on April 2. The 11 students that attended the trip were seniors Alison Collins, Stephanie Jarvis and Kristi Ward; juniors Sarah Beaulieu, Eric Black, Liz Manker, Brett Myrick and Jeff Wagner; and sophomores Brenda Denney, Brian Lauridsen and Anthony Myrick.

A group of 88 sleepy-eyed Baldwin High School students, sponsors and chaperones started out on their Florida adventure early on Saturday March 31 very early. After the drug dogs checked our bags, we loaded and boarded the buses in the rain. Even at 4 a.m. there was excitement in the air. Shelby Schafer was looking forward to the trip, and the early hours didn’t bother her too much. Lindsay Thompson was excited about seeing Mickey Mouse. Of course, it was inevitable that someone would ask “are we there yet,” but I didn’t expect to hear it from a chaperone at 4:30 in the morning!

Spearheaded by a lightning back nine by senior state qualifier Sam Reznicek, the Baldwin High School Bulldog golfers finished fourth out of the eight teams competing at the Paola Invitational despite some real lightning ending their day.

It was deja vu all over again for the Baldwin High School softball team Friday almost. It was less than perfect weather conditions and it resulted in a 1-0 loss.
BHS students gain state awards

Baldwin youth from Baldwin High School’s chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) recently participated in State STAR Events and State Leadership Showcase April 2 and 3 in Wichita.

The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation and the Hospitality Business Alliance announced the 2001 recipients of the Teacher Excellence Awards. Local educator Anita Faddis of Baldwin High School was among this year’s winners.
Clean-up, safety day set for Baldwin High

On April 19, the freshmen and sophomores of Baldwin High School will be participating in their annual Community Clean-Up day. But instead of helping the underclassmen clean the community, Baldwin juniors and seniors will participate in a Safety Awareness Day.

KYCK and Rainbow Experience Preschool are preparing their Easter festivites for children ages 2-8. The games begin at Baker University on Saturday at 10 a.m.

The heralds of spring have sounded! Each morning, the songfest and squabbles of robins and other birds replace the need for an alarm clock for those with open windows or inadequate soundproofing. The focus of conversations centers on baseball and what the Royals did, are doing or will do, depending on the playing schedule. The Master’s Golf Tournament is concluded for another year and the northern racing schedule is underway.
