BHS band, newspapers working in concert
This is the last week to take advantage of the offer that joins the forces of the Baldwin High School band and two newspapers in a fund-raising effort to help offset the cost of the band's trip to Disney World next year.
The BHS band and pom pon squad will perform in Orlando, Fla., next spring as part of the theme park's parade group. Band members will be traveling to Florida in either April or May of 2001.
To raise funds for the trip, band members will be selling subscriptions to The Baldwin City Signal and Lawrence Journal-World. For each subscription sold to The Signal, the band will receive $5; for the Journal-World, $10. The response to the offer so far has been very good.
Subscriptions to The Signal cost $30 annually for residents of Douglas County and the four-county surrounding area by carrier or mail; $35 annually by mail elsewhere in Kansas; and $40 annually elsewhere. The Journal-World offer is for 12 weeks at $34.50 and it is delivered by carrier.
The offer applies to both new subscriptions and renewals.
All band and pom pon members in the eighth through 12th grade are participating in the special fund-raiser, which runs through Friday. Each of the students is responsible for earning about $700 to pay for the trip.
"We're happy to do our part to help these band members raise funds for this outstanding opportunity," said Jeff Myrick, Signal editor/publisher. "It's a community effort because these band members will be representing the entire Baldwin City community."
Betty Bullock, president of the BHS Band Booster Club, will be in charge of the effort. Subscription forms will be available from band members and will also be included in The Signal.
