Graduates color Baker campus for Mother’s Day graduation

May 17, 2000

Baker University's Spring Commencement Sunday afternoon had a different flair to it this year it was Mother's Day and that was duly noted.

For the 481 graduates, it was a special day and for the mom's in the crowd including one from Poland (Ewa Ciepla, mother of Ola Ciepla) and one from Brazil (Oraida Abreau, mother of Julio Dos Santos).

"It was kind of fun to have it on Mother's Day," said John Fuller, Baker spokesman. "I would think that's one of the best Mother's Day presents of all.

"I saw a lot of proud moms ... and dads, too," said Fuller. "It was an emotional day. There were a lot of tears."

Baker President Daniel Lambert didn't let the significance of the day go by, either, in his opening remarks.

"Today is Mother's Day. If that's news to you, you're in trouble," said Lambert.

Sunday's commencement capped another activity filled graduation weekend at Baker, where alumni gatherings also brought hundreds of people to Baldwin.

"It was a great weekend, both weather wise and attendance wise," said Fuller. "The Class of 2000 was outstanding at all three schools. I think just about all of our graduating nurses have jobs. Most of our graduates in Arts and Sciences have jobs, too, or are going to graduate school."
