Potter, Flory place at state wrestling tourney
Two members of the Baldwin Kid Wrestling Club placed at the state tournament over the weekend in Topeka. Sean Potter finished third and Kyle Flory was fifth.
Potter recorded a 5-1 record in the 10-and-under, 70-pound class with three pins. The only match he lost was 1-0 to the eventual champion. Flory had a 3-2 record with two pins in the 14-and-under, 160-pound division.
Others reaching the semifinals were: Kevin Callahan, 2-2, two pins, 10-and-under, 82-pounds; Gabe Mason, 1-2, one pin, 10-and-under, 95-pounds; and Dan Hamilton, 1-2, one pin, 14-and-under, 175-pounds.
Making it through the quarterfinals were Steve Hamilton, Seth Halford and Adam Halford. The ninth member of the Baldwin team to wrestle was Alan Callahan. There were 1,440 wrestlers at the state meet.
Next up is nationals, also at Topeka, Friday through Sunday. Six Baldwin wrestlers have qualified Potter, Mason, L. Halford, A. Callahan, K. Callahan and Josh Wood. There will be wrestlers from 40 states in attendance.
For the season, the team had 355 wins, 276 pins and won 191 medals. Potter won the team pinning contest for the fifth year in a row with 26, to go along with his 30-4 record. K. Callahan was second with 21 pins and a 27-9 record. Flory was third with 18 pins and a 24-6 mark.
