Callahan Liquor plans expansion to larger building
Callahan Retail Liquor, 215 Ames, is preparing for a spring-time move to the former Jim 'N I's building at the corner of U.S. Highway 56 and Eisenhower Street.
Callahan Liquor LLC purchased the building, which has been vacant more than a year. Owners Mike and Joyce Callahan closed on the property on March 6.
If all goes according to plan, Joyce said the liquor store will be open for business on April 17. The current store location will remain open throughout the moving process.
Joyce said the move provides the business with a better location and more than four times the space. The current store is 900-square-feet of space. The new building is more than 4,000-square-feet.
The additional space will accommodate a wine area, a beer and spirits area, more cooler space, an office and storage. Most recently used as a restaurant, Joyce said the building will require some minor remodeling before opening.
"We are real excited," she said. "I think people will like the wine area, a place where they can go and browse."
Callahan is keeping a list of the products customers would like her to carry at the new store. A larger selection of wines is part of that list. She and her five employees are becoming better versed on the varieties of wine.
"I want to increase our wine volume over there," she said. "I think Baldwin is ready for that. People have their favorites."
The Callahans have owned the liquor store since 1996.
"We felt like we needed a bigger location," Joyce said.
And so did customers, she said.
