Tired of board bashing
To the editor:
I have been disturbed and concerned over the controversy regarding the method of selecting school board members for USD 348. As a resident of Baldwin for over 40 years, an employee of USD 348 for 32 years and a member of the board for eight years, I remember the turmoil accompanying unification.
Baldwin is such a unique district. We have three distinct communities forming our district the Baldwin City community, the Marion Springs community and the Vinland community. In each of these the school is vital and the hub of the community. I have always felt the representation from each of the communities has been vital and invaluable to our district to be sure needs and concerns for our students in each area are recognized and met. These three communities work well together to form our unified district for our patrons.
My biggest concern now is the "bashing" of our Board of Education members. We have seven members elected by you, the patrons, who spend many, many hours of volunteer time to make your school one of the best in our area. These dedicated individuals do this because they care about our schools and want the best for the students in our district. For this work they receive no pay, very little thanks and what I consider unwarranted criticism. This can't be a positive situation for our community.
Every two years at least three members of the board are up for re-election. If you have concerns, run for the board. In the meantime give your support to your elected members and help them make us better.
