Young Skyhawks go 4-2 in tourney
The Sunflower Skyhawks 16-and-under team put together a 4-2 record in the first tournament of the summer season Friday through Sunday at the Johnson County Girls Athletic Association tournament.
The Skyhawks won their opener Friday 9-8 over the Kansas City Northwind with the help of an International Tie Breaker. The tourney games were limited to 75 minutes, but with the score tied 5-5 after the time limit, the teams went to the ITB where the Skyhawks won. Kyrstan Hubbel was the winning pitcher.
Saturday morning, the Skyhawks blasted the Jaguars 12-4, with Liz Burks picking up the pitching win. The winning streak ended there, as the Skyhawks dropped a 4-2 count to the St. Joe Diamond Queens. Hubbel took the loss.
The Skyhawks then rebounded with a 6-5 win over the Aliens, with Hubbel picking up the win. That left the team in third place in the seven-team pool.
That set the brackets for Sunday's elimination round. The Skyhawks won the first game 9-1 with Burks pitching. They fell 3-2 in the quarterfinals to end with a 4-2 record.
The Skyhawks return to tournament action Friday through Sunday at the Shawnee County Girls Softball Association Open Tournament. Their first game is Friday at 6:30 p.m. and the second at 9:30 p.m. They are also scheduled to play at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. All three games are on the blue field. Results from those will determine additional play.
