Baldwin 7 and 8 All-Stars take tourney
The Baldwin 7 and 8 All-Star Coach-Pitch Baseball Team battled the heat and the opposition a week ago Saturday to win the Wellsville All-Star Tournament.
Besides Baldwin, the tournament featured teams from Wellsville, Eudora and Spring Hill. The first three games consisted of pool play to determine which teams would play for the championship and which would play for third place. The first game Saturday morning matched Baldwin and Spring Hill with Baldwin prevailing 18-17. The second game paired Baldwin versus Eudora in an extra inning affair, with Eudora squeezing by 16-15 in its last at bat.
Headed into the third game of pool play, Baldwin needed the win to advance to the championship game. Behind some timely hitting, they were able to defeat Wellsville 26-15. The championship game against Eudora yet to be defeated in the tourney was next.
In the final match up of the day, hot bats and great defense gave Baldwin the momentum it needed to put Eudora away in 4 1/2 innings by the score of 17-4, thus closing out the season as tournament champs. For the four games, Baldwin outscored its opponents 75-53.
Other tournament highlights included Braden Phillips winning the base running contest and Justin Vander Tuig taking third in the home run hitting contest. Additionally, Baldwin was awarded the sportsmanship award at the end of the tournament, given annually to the team, coaches and fans exhibiting the best sportsmanship throughout the course of the tournament.
For the four games of the tournament, the team members (with times on base, runs scored) was as follows: Shelby Arnold (12, 4); Tyler Beebe (13, 11); Tory Courter (7, 6); Joshua Hoffman (12, 7); Brandon Kraus (12, 8); Jesse McDaniels (10, 4); Heath Parmley (14, 12); Kyle Pattrick (did not play); Braden Phillips (9, 5); Andrew Sutton (7, 4); Justin Vander Tuig (14, 9) and Brian Wright (10, 6). The team was coached by Brad Wright, Paul Vander Tuig and Todd Hoffman.
