BHS freshmen girls win tournament
It was a busy week for the Baldwin High School freshmen girls basketball team, but when the smoke had cleared they remained unbeaten and added the Tonganoxie Tournament title to their accomplishments for the year.
The BHS freshmen played six games in five days, starting with a victory over Spring Hill Tuesday and ending with a 52-30 win over Basehor-Linwood in the tournament finals Saturday. In between they beat Lansing 43-24 Wednesday to open the tournament, Ottawa 42-28 Thursday, Paola 42-31 Friday and DeSoto 45-15 in Saturday's tourney semifinals.
"The Paola game Friday night really took something out of us," said coach Bob Martin, who saw his team trail after the first quarter for the first time this year. "I was worried because we had to get up early Saturday and go play.
"But I could tell between games Saturday they were all right," said Martin. "I was tickled with how they responded. They played very well."
Tournament game leading scorers were: Lansing Anna Skaggs 15 points, Kayla Pringle 11; DeSoto Pringle and MartiKay Hess, both with 10; and Basehor-Linwood, Pringle 17 and Skaggs 10.
The string of victories moved the BHS freshmen's record to a perfect 18-0, with two games left Tuesday against Osawatomie and Friday against Louisburg, both at home.
