Lang leads BHS wrestlers at league tourney

February 16, 2000

The Baldwin High School wrestlers competed at the Frontier League Tournament at Louisburg High School on Saturday and placed seventh out of 10 teams. Three wrestlers placed in the top four, and six other wrestlers were just one match away from placing.

Senior Luke Lang won the 189-pound weight division, improving his record to a 22-2 on the year. Lang recorded three straight pins for the title. Sophomore Witt Hinton received a third-place medal in the 275-pound weight class and improved his record to 11-9 on the year. Hinton was 3-1 for the tourney with three pins. Sophomore Chris Hirschmann placed fourth at 152-pounds with a 2-2 record and moved his record to 18-18 on the year.

Finishing in the top six were Andy Breedlove, Nathan Deel, Tom Wilson, Zach Haeffner and Zach Good. Baldwin finished seventh as a team, just behind Louisburg.

Paola finished first with 224 points, followed by: Anderson County, 127; Eudora, 109.5; Spring Hill, 101.5; Osawatomie, 89; Louisburg, 70; Baldwin, 62; Wellsville, 45; Prairie View, 39; and Gardner-Edgerton, 33.

On Thursday, Baldwin took on Eudora and Paola. The Panthers showed the Bulldogs how tough they really were and defeated Baldwin 69-6. The final dual of the evening came against the Eudora Cardinals, who defeated Baldwin 56-21. The only winning matches were freshman Joe Brown and Lang. This was the last match before continuing on through regionals and the Class 4A State Tournament.

"We had a very successful dual season," said coach Kit Harris of the team's final 11-9 record, which marked the first time since 1989 that BHS had a winning dual record. "With our depth, we were able to put together a solid dual lineup throughout the year despite the numerous injuries and missed competition situations we had to deal with. In our 'could-have-gone-either-way' duals, we won four of six and that was key."

Next up for the Bulldogs is regionals at Kansas City Piper Friday and Saturday. Action starts at 2 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday. All league schools except Class 5A Paola and Class 3A Wellsville will be in the tourney, along with Basehor-Linwood, Burlington, KC Piper, KC Sumner, KC Ward, Ottawa and Tonganoxie.

The top four individual placers in each weight division from that tournament will advance to the State Tournament in Wichita Feb. 25-26.
