Deel, Wilson named top wrestlers
This week's Baldwin High School wrestlers of the week are Nathan Deel for the varsity and Tom Wilson for the junior varsity.
"First-year wrestler Nathan Deel has started to greatly improve as a varsity competitor," said coach Kit Harris. "As the team's starting 103-pounder, Deel had a big week winning two exciting matches by fall and placing third at the George Worley Invitational Tournament in Atchison last Saturday." Against his Burlington opponent, Deel won a chaotic overtime match after a 22-22 regulation score. Deel then overpowered his opponent in overtime, recording a fall and six team points. In his third-place match at Atchison, Deel was losing in the early going, but scored four consecutive takedowns to take a narrow lead, before throwing a headlock to win by fall and earn the bronze medal.
"Nathan and a lot of our first-year wrestlers are really starting to come around," said Harris. "Deel had an exciting week, winning some big matches. He is an exciting freshman to watch and he has a bright future in this sport."
Wilson has proved to be one of the most reliable and durable Bulldogs this season. The sophomore has split time between varsity and junior varsity by filling in for injured wrestlers ahead of him whenever asked to do so by the coaching staff. He has shown tremendous improvement. After a winless freshman season, Wilson has a 7-9 JV record and has wrestled competitively on the varsity level, wrestling quality opponents in tough matches.
"Tom has been extremely reliable for the team and has a super attitude of doing whatever the team needs," said Harris. "He wrestles from the first whistle to the last and is starting to develop as a wrestler with his techniques. It won't be long and he will be one of the team leaders. He has a lot of heart, determination, and perseverance and those are the ingredients of a winner."
