Cleopha Morris

Funeral Mass for Cleopha "Cleo" Morris, 83, Parsons, was Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Parsons. Mrs. Morris died Tuesday, November 28, 2000 at her daughter's home following a lengthy illness.

She was born April 9, 1917 east of St. Paul, the daughter of Leo L. and Agnes A. (Hofer) Venneman. She graduated in 1935 as valedictorian from St. Francis High School in St. Paul.

Following graduation, she taught at Osborne School and then at Brogan School for several years. She later worked as a timekeeper at the Kansas Ordinance Plant.

She married Merle C. Morris March 19, 1944 at St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul. She moved to Monterey, Calif. to be near her husband, who was stationed at Fort Ord. They moved to Parsons in 1945. He preceded her in death on April 21, 1960.

In the early 1960s, she worked as Deputy Clerk of the District Court, and then was appointed Clerk of the District Court and then elected to another term as clerk. She later worked for the State of Kansas as an unemployment insurance claims examiner until retiring in 1980.

She is survived by a son, Gregory M. Morris and his wife, Kathy, Parsons; two daughters, Evelyn A. Forbes and her husband, Michael, Parsons and Marilyn K. Hanny and her husband, Gordon, Afton, Okla. (formerly of Baldwin City); thirteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and a brother, Francis Venneman, Parsons.

Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Parsons. Memorials may be sent to St. Patrick's Catholic School or St. John's Hospice c/o the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, 1814 Broadway, PO Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
