Time to ‘Dress the Dawg’

Those trying to follow the ticket sales progress of the first-ever Bulldog Bash will only have to take a drive past The Lodge on U.S. Highway 56 to see how sales are going. A 4- x 8-foot billboard featuring a Bulldog football player and an accompanying sales scale were revealed this week as the “Dress the Dawg” sign was put in place.
BHS’s Halford, Breedlove earn wins at Nationals

Seven Baldwin High School wrestlers represented Kansas in the National Freestyle/Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships in Fargo, N. D., last week, and two came home with a couple of victories to be proud of.
Skyhawks rally to ninth

The 16-and-under Baldwin Skyhawks played some exciting softball this weekend by rallying in their last at bat to either tie or win the game in three contests at the ASA Mid-America Regional tournament in Topeka. The Hawks fell short of their goal of qualifying for the World Series by finishing ninth out of 31 teams.

The 18-and-under Sunflower Skyhawks traveled to Adair Park in Kansas City this weekend to compete in the 27 team USSSA Mid-American Regional. The Hawks faced teams from St. Louis, Omaha, and Kansas City and came home with a 2-2 record and a tie for ninth place.
Black, Heffner bring home bronze

Three Baldwin Track Club veterans competed in the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics last week and two of them came home from the meet in Buffalo, New York, as All-Americans.

Budget ready for hearing

The public hearing for the Baldwin School District’s 2000-2001 budget will be at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14 at the district office. The school board Monday night approved the budget for publication. It appears on page B-4.
LOB is approved; Johnson is elected

Baldwin City voters approved an increased in the local option budget in a close vote and chose Bob Johnson as the Republican candidate for 2nd District Douglas County Commissioner by a wide margin in Tuesday’s primary election.
Board OKs recreation mill increase
August 2, 2000
The Baldwin City Recreation Commission is raising its budget about $40,000 by increasing the property taxes it levies by 1 mill. Monte Ezell, director of the recreation commission, said it has been about four years since the commission has sought to increase its mill levy. The commission is seeking an increase from 2.5 mills to 3.5 mills. The recreation commission board approved the increase and held a public hearing on July 20.

David Routh didn’t know a lot of Spanish when he embarked on a nearly six-week long trip to South America. He had a list of places he wanted to see, a guide book to the countries he would be visiting, and everything he would need for the journey was packed in a backpack.

It was back to football for many and a beginning for others as Mike Berg had more than 125 Baldwin youths through three football camps in the last two weeks.

Schwalm, car headed to nationals

Comprehensive plan reviewed

The City Council and Baldwin City Planning Commission jointly discussed the city’s comprehensive plan last Tuesday night, following the city’s budget hearing.

Does the budget really need to increase this much? That’s what a couple of Baldwin City residents wanted to know at the public hearing for the city’s 2001 budget last Tuesday. The meeting was held after The Signal went to press last week. The answer from city officials: Probably.
